AR Rahman Triumphs Over Suicidal Thoughts: A Candid Reflection on Mental Health Struggles

AR Rahman recently engaged in a discussion with students from the Oxford Union debating society, shedding light on spirituality and mental health. He opened up about grappling with suicidal thoughts during his youth and attributed his resilience to the unwavering support of his mother, Kareema Begum.

Reflecting on his challenging past, Rahman shared his mother’s profound advice: “During a period of suicidal thoughts in my youth, my mother would console me, saying, ‘When you live for others, you won’t entertain such thoughts.'” He emphasized the significance of leading a selfless life, a lesson instilled by his mother, and how it contributes to finding profound purpose.

The Oscar-winning music composer elaborated on the impact of selflessness on his life, stating, “When you lead a selfless life, finding purpose becomes profound. I’ve embraced this philosophy earnestly—whether I’m composing for others, writing with a cause in mind, assisting someone in need with food, or simply sharing a smile—these acts serve as the driving force.”

Rahman underscored the importance of hope and the unknown future, explaining, “Moreover, considering our limited foresight into the future, there might be extraordinary experiences awaiting us. The presence of these elements, coupled with hope, sustains my motivation.”

Responding to questions about his infrequent discussions on spirituality, he noted, “We all go through challenging phases. One thing is certain; our time in this world is a brief journey. We are born, and we will eventually depart. This world is not our permanent residence, and where we are headed remains unknown, varying based on each person’s individual imagination and beliefs.”

On the professional front, Rahman’s recent musical composition featured in the film “Pippa,” starring Ishaan Khatter and Mrunal Thakur. Looking ahead, the acclaimed composer has a promising lineup of projects, including “Ayalaan” with Sivakarthikeyan, “Lal Salaam” with Rajinikanth, “Maidaan” with Ajay Devgan, “Chamkila” with Imtiaz Ali, “D50” with Dhanush, “The Goat Life” with Prithviraj Sukumaran, and “Thug Life” with Mani Ratnam, among several other notable films.
