Grammy Triumph: Shakti’s Fusion Brilliance Wins Best Global Music Album

Musical maestro AR Rahman exuded joy in a selfie alongside the 2024 Grammy Award winners, tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, singer Shankar Mahadevan, and percussionist V Selvaganesh. The delightful snapshot, captured at the event, found its way to Rahman’s Instagram.

Sporting smiles directed at the camera, AR Rahman donned a stylish black and green ensemble for the occasion. Shankar Mahadevan opted for a vibrant green outfit, while Zakir Hussain adorned a traditional blue attire, adding a touch of cultural elegance to the ensemble.

AR Rahman joyfully captioned the post, “A downpour of Grammys for India… Congratulations to the Grammy champions #ustadzakirhussain (3 Grammys) @shankar.mahadevan (first Grammy) @selvaganesh (first Grammy).”

Shakti, the dynamic fusion music collective led by Zakir Hussain and Shankar Mahadevan, clinched the coveted Grammy for the Best Global Music Album with their mesmerising creation, “This Moment.” The album boasts the collaborative brilliance of Shakti’s founding member, guitarist John McLaughlin, in synergy with Zakir, Shankar, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram. Marking a triumphant return after more than 45 years, Shakti’s “This Moment” captivated audiences and critics alike when it was released to widespread acclaim in June 2023.

Zakir Hussain emerged triumphant with an additional pair of Grammys at the event: securing the title for Best Global Music Performance with “Pashto” and clinching another accolade for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for “As We Speak,” a collaboration with banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer, featuring the accomplished Indian flute player Rakesh Chaurasia.
