Kiran Rao is making a comeback as a director with her upcoming film, a social comedy titled “Laapataa Ladies,” set to release on January 5, 2024. The teaser of the movie was unveiled by Aamir Khan Productions last Friday.
The story is set in rural India and revolves around two men who file a complaint with the police, claiming that their newlywed brides have gone missing while they were on the same train journey. In the teaser, Ravi Kishan, portraying a constable, questions one of the grooms about having a picture of the bride. One groom shows a photo from their wedding day, where the bride’s face is concealed by her wedding attire, keeping her identity a mystery.

According to the official statement for the film, “Set in 2001, somewhere in rural India, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ tells the delightful tale of two young brides who are accidentally swapped during a train journey. This mix-up leads to a series of comical encounters with various vibrant characters, resulting in unexpected and hilarious consequences. The lost ladies embark on a heartwarming journey of self-discovery, exploring the essence of womanhood and the ups and downs of life itself.”
“Laapataa Ladies” is a co-production between Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, along with Jio Studios. Sneha Desai has penned the screenplay. The film also features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Chhaya Kadam.
The movie will have its world premiere at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival, marking Kiran Rao’s return to directing after a hiatus of 12 years following her last film, “Dhobi Ghat.”
