Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' Dominates 2024 BAFTA Nominations with 13 Nods; Barbie Falls Short

With an impressive 13 nominations, Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller “Oppenheimer” emerged as a dominant force in the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards nominations announced on Thursday. However, the absence of Greta Gerwig, the creator of “Barbie,” from the Best Director nominations surprised and disappointed many fans.

In the selection process for BAFTA nominations in directing and acting categories, a complex procedure is followed. After identifying the top two or three vote-getters (depending on the race), dedicated juries take over to choose the remaining nominees for each category. Although this method makes the results somewhat intricate to analyze, it doesn’t hinder enthusiasts from engaging in speculation and anticipation.

In the wake of “Oppenheimer,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ steampunk black comedy, “Poor Things,” emerged as a strong contender with 11 nominations. The film received recognition in categories like Best Film, and Emma Stone earned a nomination for leading actress.

While “Barbie” shared the most longlist slots with “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the film only managed to secure five nominations at the BAFTA Film Awards. Notably absent from critical categories like Best Film and Best Director, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling received recognition for their performances, but the film failed to make a significant impact in major categories.

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” both garnered nine nominations each. However, both filmmakers were notably absent from the Best Director category, and Lily Gladstone’s omission in the leading actress category for “Killers of the Flower Moon” also raised eyebrows.

Nevertheless, not all surprises were disheartening for fans. Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner, “Anatomy of a Fall,” left a striking impression with seven nominations. Triet herself earned a nomination for Best Director, representing the lone woman on the six-member list.

The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is slated for February 18 at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and it will be hosted by Doctor Who star David Tennant.
