REVIEW: How the story of a “Happily Married Couple” Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) and Vikram changed into a legal battle and moved till DIVORCE.

Amrita always nurtures the dream of being the best housewife ever. That’s why she was giving up her passion for classical dance. She is an adorable and lovable wife who invests her total life for taking care of the household. One can definitely say that her married life seems to be perfect. Vikram (Pavail Gulati) is a self-starter and he has the go-getter kind of attitude towards his goals and he can do everything to achieve the sky-high.

But, once he realises that his dreams are dead on one’s feet for office politics. His pent-up frustration finds the way on his lovable wife, in the form of a hard-hitting slap. And, with that slap, Amrita’s perception towards “happy family” totally changed. This is the beginning of an emotional battle which excel domestic violence.

This uncalled, unexpected incident gives a question mark about her life, love, choices and marriage as well. Vikram wonders how ‘just one slap’ is making a mark on his so-called happy married life tagline and it’s a transpire a life-changing moment.

Thappad is a film about a women’s self-respect. 2 hours and 21 minutes-long social drama, has brought questions which need to really talk about. With this film director, Anubhav Sinha attempts to bring forth some topics like self-respect and the dignity of women and take it into a strong discussion.

One stress-fuelled slap changes the whole story. What are the rules of marriage? After marriage women are constantly prompt that family is the main and ultimate priority of her life. Every husband loves his better half Like as Vikram but the career goals, depression made him a monster.

Even before the friction and clash arise, everyone can see a happy Taapsee making plans of a ‘big blue door’ at their future London apartment. Finally, when the Thappad happens, her world reverses, every one of her family debated on what is right, what is wrong and what is the protocol of marriage in our society. Whatever views were thrown at her, Amrita is gutsy and spunky. She stands up for what she truly believes in and was determined to fight for this injustice through a legal battle. She believes in the heart that one slap is not just a slap it’s a shocking appealing nefarious and is not okay for anyone.

‘Thappad’ is not just a film against domestic violence; it brings to the limelight about the conditioning that every woman faces because of her own family and society that she lives with and in. The film also talked about some stereotype issues of the society, like the women should acquire skill in tolerating and accept suffering. When a woman is tagged as a divorcee behind her name, is seen in a completely different conception in our society. And finally, one slap can change the whole conception of love. This is the fight for respect. Sinha very beautifully manages to entwine all these stories with one another at the right path.

Taapsee, roles as the dutiful obedient humble submissive wife. Taapsee conveys some speech that is providing psychological relief through the open expression of strong emotion to its very core. Her portrayal is moderately controlled but at the same time, she reveals pain, aversion regret, lament and rage.

Pavel Gulati, as the determined and carry off with his life goals. Sometimes you will want to hate him for his fault. Kumud Mishra as an ardent supporter of his daughter and stands out with his character.

Tanvi Azmi and Ratna Pathak Shah, as Amrita’s mother-in-law and mother respectively, play their roles of matriarchal mentality. Maya Sarao, who plays the high-profile lawyer Nethra Jaisingh, is the fragile portion of the film. Her performance got overshadowed by other power-packed presentation.

The music of the film is excellently melancholic and fine combination with the narrative. Great, outstanding, fine and nuanced writing, by Anubhav and Mrunmayee Lagoo, earned a special mention as that is takes the whole story scores higher.

Finally ‘Thappad’ is a silent slap on our society’s some age-old beliefs and this is the time that we need to start talking about all these issues.
