It Happened In Calcutta -Biggest Love Saga in the backdrop of 60’s & 70s

by Team Expresso

Some love stories are defined by the lovers’ togetherness and some by the lovers’ separation! Witness the biggest love saga of the year 2020 with ALTBalaji and ZEE5 as they launch ‘IT HAPPENED IN CALCUTTA’. This unique period drama featuring Karan Kundrra and Naghma Rizwan as Ronobir and Kusum respectively will evoke memories of not only retro fashion, easy love of the 60s but also war and cholera of 70s.

Set against the backdrop of Calcutta in the 1960s, it will invoke a sense of nostalgia for the retro love-story while also tugging at one’s heartstrings. With February being the month of love, It Happened In Calcutta offers audiences a fresh take on love and betrayal and how it can transcend across a decade.

The story revolves around Kusum, a young girl who aspires to become the first female doctor in the city and gets admission in the Calcutta Medical College to fulfil her dreams. In college, she comes across a privileged, arrogant and devastatingly handsome boy named Ronobir and falls in love with him. But there is more to this tale than what meets the eye.

Things take a turn for the worst as all she gets in return is heartbreak and betrayal, leading to a separation that makes her lose faith in Ronobir & love. While they mature over time, it’s their love that takes a beating leading to moments where they just don’t want to be with each other. The web-series invokes a sense of nostalgia for the love-story set in the period of the 1960s and 70s when the country was dealing with political unrest, the Indo-Pak war (1971) and cholera outbreak. Constantly crossing paths, the chemistry between Kusum and Ronobir, that starts right from the time they meet in college, is filled with ups and downs.

The 9 episodes of this romance drama spanning across the 1960-1970s India will beautifully showcase retro India in the costumes, set-up and the locations against the backdrop of Calcutta and also one can hear the beautiful melodies like ‘The ‘Ekla Chalo Re’, ‘Subah ki Garmi’, and Sukoon which have been created keeping the theme of the show in mind. These beautiful tracks perfectly capture how the lead couple yearn for each other and express their feelings. Apart from the love saga, the series will also touch upon the pertinent events of the time – cholera epidemic and World War.

Talking about the mega show Karan Kundrra shares, “Giving me the chance to try something different and new, It Happened in Calcutta is one of the biggest and most interesting projects of my career. The web-series has panned out really well with some amazing twists and turns which will keep viewers glued to their screens. So put your seatbelts on and enjoy the ride.”

Debutante Naghma Rizwan shares, “They say what you seek is seeking you, and that’s exactly how I got this show as my debut. like it found me. I’m a blessed child. To get an opportunity so grand is nothing less than magical for me. Whatever Ekta Ma’am saw in me, I hope to not disappoint her coz I truly admire her vision. To be launched on such a big scale and work with such an amazing team, is my achievement in itself. This show has given wings to my dreams and now it’s time to fly”.
