In preparing for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” Richa Chadha drew significant inspiration from Meena Kumari’s iconic performance in the Bollywood classic “Pakeezah” (1972). Under Bhansali’s guidance, she studied Meena Kumari’s nuanced acting in the film, describing it as a transformative and enriching experience that deeply influenced her portrayal of Lajjo, a courtesan in the series.

“Studying Meena Kumari Ji’s work, I focused on voice, diction, and sometimes even imitation. Walking in the footsteps of such a cinematic legend felt like an honor, and portraying Lajjo was a tribute to her,” Richa Chadha remarked.

Additionally, Richa shared a video on social media showcasing highlights from the trailer launch event of “Heeramandi” at Chanakya cinema hall in New Delhi on April 9th.

“I’m thrilled about portraying Lajjo in ‘Heeramandi’ because it’s a departure from what people have seen of me. This role challenged my skill set in new ways,” wrote the 37-year-old actress in her post shared on Monday. “Collaborating with SLB was a joy, and his ability to create unique universes is unparalleled,” she added.

The video begins with a glimpse of the venue before the promotional event at Chanakya cinema hall, showcasing the regal outfits worn by the actresses in the series, a royal sofa, and character posters. Richa Chadha comments on being back at Chanakya, where she used to watch movies, adding a humorous touch as a makeup artist applies finishing touches to her face.

Richa looked stunning in a green-and-pink salwar suit paired with danglers and a pearl passa, reminiscent of her character’s look in the series. On stage with co-star Sanjeeda Sheikh, she performed a line from the trailer, earning cheers from the audience.

“Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” marking Bhansali’s OTT debut, will delve into the lives of courtesans in Lahore’s oldest red-light district, exploring themes of love, passion, freedom, and betrayal against the backdrop of British-ruled India. The trailer showcased the struggles of courtesans portrayed by Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Shaikh amidst the rising anti-colonial movements.

“Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” is set to premiere on Netflix on May 1st.
